We've been deceived by conmen

Many of the theses contained in the Hans Christian Andersen classic children’s story of an emperor who was deceived into believing that only wise and intelligent people could see what two con-men said was reality have come to pass in America Christianity. Not wanting to be thought of as ignorant of unenlightened, the emperor convinced himself to parade before his subjects naked, choosing to believe the lie that he wore the most beautiful garments ever created.
