America has Replaced God with Entertainment

America loves entertainment. Put another way, we’re a nation obsessed with amusements. Muse, you may remember, means “tothink.” The prefix a serves to negate that which comes after it. Thus, an a-muse-ment is an activity, event or presentation that holds a person’s attention and keeps him or her from thinking. Of course, some amusements can be healthy; occasionally everyone needs a break from mental and physical activity. Problems arise, however, when we enjoy too many amusements and when the amusements we enjoy conflict with virtuous ideals.
